The SCC PTA is here to support your local unit. Never hesitate to ask Becca Priddy, President for help and be sure to give your various chairs the contact information for their SCC counterpart. We all have email addresses listed on the website - use us! We volunteer to fill these positions as a service to local units.

Convention time is just around the corner! This year’s TN PTA Convention is in Kingsport, TN. Presidents
should have received packets in the mail but information is available on the TN PTA website for anyone who
is interested in attending.
Why should I attend Convention?
Convention is the one place where our entire state’s local units come together to share, learn, experience
and celebrate our local units
.
- Training is key for PTA leaders – it ensures that PTAs are run according to the standards set forth
and the rules that we must follow to remain a 501 c 3 organization. There are workshops for all
levels of PTA – those who are just getting their feet wet to those who have served in various levels for
years.
- There are keynote speakers who can offer potential programs for your local unit. Speakers and
workshop presenters can give you the spark to take back exciting new ideas to your local unit.
- Convention is a time when the local delegates (you) are able to voice your concerns and vote on the
issues on the table that will lead us into the next decade
.
- Convention also allows you time to share ideas and brainstorm with other leaders from across the
state. Casual conversations can spark enthusiasm and ideas for your students, teachers and
members.
- The grand finale of convention is the Awards Banquet – where your hard work is recognized and
rewarded. If you send in your reports (they are due in the TN PTA office on or before March 1), you
have the opportunity to be chosen as an award recipient. It is also exciting to see reactions from
winners and the excitement is catching. Banquet is when everyone can be proud of PTA
.
- And finally, some of the best ideas come from brainstorming on the ride home. Carpoolers have
time to bounce ideas off each other, begin to make plans, discuss what has or hasn’t worked
before…it is a think tank on wheels!
So please take a moment to join us. Shelby County generally has the largest group of delegates at
Convention and even though it is a far drive, it is more than worth the time and money to go.
Each year the Shelby County Council
PTA awards (2) $500 Senior
Scholarships to graduating seniors
who wish to pursue a career in
education or a child-related program.

RUBYE DOBBINS ART MINI GRANT

Tennessee has about 438,750 elementary age children
who are at risk each day and need to learn fire safety
survival skills. Tennessee is currently number one in the
Nation of residents who die or are severely burned in fire
related incidents. Tennessee PTA provides
comprehensive Buzzly Fire Safety programs to the
elementary schools to act as a tool to teach fire safety skills
to the young high-risk children.

YEAR END BOARD TRANSITIONS
|
The PTA year ends on June 30th and the new one begins on July 1st! One of
the most stressful and difficult times of the year can occur during the transition of one
PTA board to another as they change leadership. Change is difficult but a necessity
of life. The sharing of leadership information should begin as soon as the new
officers are elected. Below is a flyer listing responsibilities of both your outgoing
board and your incoming board.
